The first World Congress of Pharmacology was held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1961. Two years later the second
congress took place in Prague in Czechoslovakia. Until 1990, the congresses
were then held every three years, alternating with the world congresses
of the closely related sister biomedical unions, IUBMB (International
Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) and IUPS (International Union
of Physiology).
After 1990, the congresses moved to a four-year interval, with the new
World Conferences of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (CPT), which
are organised by the IUPHAR Division on Clinical Pharmacology, taking
place inbetween.
As the relationship between the pre-clinical and therapeutic axes of
the subject becomes increasingly important, IUPHAR is exploring ways to
combine the scientific programmes at a single venue. In 2010, the first
combined event will take place. The successful bid to host the World Congress
of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology was made by the Danish Society of Pharmacology
and Toxicology.
Adhering national societies of pharmacology are invited to bid to host
future congresses on behalf of IUPHAR. Voting by delegates (the nominated
representatives from all members of IUPHAR) to appoint the successful
host takes place at the congress eight years prior to the event under
consideration. The election is held during the meeting of the General
Assembly of the IUPHAR Council and announced immediately.
